MASOOR KI GHANI DAL |
U need:
Red masoor dal: 1 cup
Onion: 1 sliced fine
Small onion: 1/2 cup peeled
green chillies: 2 minced
ginger julliene: 1 tsp
tomato: 1 medium size chopped fine
bay leaf: 1
ghee: 2 tablsp
saunf: 1/2 tsp
jeera: 1/2 tsp
red chilli powder: 1/2 tsp
turmeric powder: 1/2 tsp
garam masala:1/2 tsp
coriander leaves: 2 tsp chopped fine
salt to taste
Method:
1. Soak dal in 2 cups water for 2 hours. Wash well,put in a pressure cooker add turmeric,salt 1&1/2 cup water and pressure cook ( about 2 or 3 whistle.)
2. Heat ghee in a kadai. When hot add bay leaf,saunf,jeera,saute. Add the minced green chilli,sliced onions and saute well till the onions are translucent.
3. Add sliced tomatoes,stir well .Cover with a lid and cook till the tomatoes are mashed well.
4. Remove lid. Open the pressure cooker and add the cooked dal to the cooking tomato-onion paste. Stir well,add 1/2 cup water and simmer for about 5 to 7 mins.
5. Sprinkle coriander leaves, mix in the ginger julienne.
6. Heat 1 tablsp ghee .Put the red chilli powder and garam masala and sliced small onions to the hot ghee. Stir quickly and add this to the simmering dal. Cover the dal and switch off the gas.This will help the masalas to infuse well into the dal..
Serve the dal with hot rotis and parathas.
Note: Simple,mouthwatering and easy to make this dal also goes well with rice and potato curry.To serve with rice make the thick a little thinner by adding 1 cup water while simmering.

Bengal gram(chola) dal: 1&1/2 cups
tomatoes: 2 medium cut into 4
ginger -green chillies paste: 2 tsp
turmeric:1/2 tsp
red chilli powder: 1/2 tsp
bay leaf:2
red chilli:1
salt to taste
sugar :1 tsp
ghee: 2 tablsp
jeera(cumin seed): 1 tsp
asefodita: 1/2 tsp
Method:
1. Soak the dal for 5 hrs.Wash well and pressure cook the dal with 2 cups water and 2 bay leaf and turmeric powder for 3 whistle. Once the cooker is cool open lid,add the tomatoes and further cook in the cooker itself on gas for 10 mins till the tomatoes are mashed and blended well in the dal.
2. Add 1/2 cup water,salt and sugar and simmer.
3. In a kadai heat ghee.When hot add asefodita,jeera and red chilli. Saute. Now add the ginger-green chilli paste,red chilli powder and stir briskly.Pour this over the simmering dal.
4.Cover the dal with a lid and off the gas.
5.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or rotis.
Note: The dal consistency can be thick,semi-thick or a little thin,according to taste.But it should not be watery.The semi thick dal tastes the best with rotis and slightly thinner version tastes good with rice.

Sweet potatoes: 3 medium sized
Grated coconut: 2 tsp
green chilli-curry leaves paste: 2 tsp ( 3 green chillies,few curry leaves ground)
oil: 2 tablsp
asefodita: 1/2 tsp
turmeric powder: 1/2 tsp
salt to taste
sugar: 1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds
Method:
Clean the sweet potatoes well and lightly peel.Cut into chunks and pressure cook for 1 whistle.
Open cooker,put the cooked potatoes on a plate and crumble.
Heat oil in a kadai. When hot add asefodita,mustard seeds and the ground green chilli-curry leaves paste. Saute quickly.
Add the crumbled sweet potatoes and stir well.Add Turmeric,salt and sugar. Continue stirring.
Add grated coconut and toss well for 5 to 7 mins.
Transfer to a serving bowl.Serve hot with rotis or rice,masoor dal and pappads.
Note: You can add finely chopped spinach leaves to get a different delicious taste.
Tasty and quick to make,sweet potatoes blend well any other vegetables too.
